The German Center for Lung Research (DZL) is a network initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that networks scientists at five locations and deals with eight disease areas in lung research.

mission

The aim of the DZL is to use a new, integrative approach to find answers to open questions in research into lung diseases. This is intended to make a significant contribution to improved preventive care, diagnosis, individualized therapy and optimal patient care. The focus is on basic research that is closely linked to clinical practice. In a bidirectional process, the results of basic research are to be quickly transferred to clinical medicine ( translational medicine ) and tissue samples obtained in the clinic are to be collected in a biobank and used in basic research.

Disease fields

Eight disease fields are being researched in the DZL:

founding

The founding event was on November 14, 2011 as a registered association concluded an approximately two-year initiation phase during which the best scientific concepts were determined in an assessment process by an international committee of experts. On June 9, 2011, Federal Research Minister Annette Schavan presented the DZL as one of the four new German Centers for Health Research (DZG). Together with the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD), founded in 2009, and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), the number of DZGs at the end of 2011 was six.

Structure and members

The DZL networks scientists at five locations, which in turn comprise several university and non-university partner institutions. The overall scientific coordinated by Werner Seeger , who is also chairman of the Association DZL e. V. is. The project sponsor is the Helmholtz Zentrum München .

Overview of the five locations:

financing

The DZL is financed to 90% from federal funds. The federal states in which the respective partner institutes are located contribute 10%. The first funding period ran from 2011 to 2015. After the positive assessment by an international scientific committee, the DZL entered a second funding period (2016 to 2020).
