Susanne Popp (history teacher)

Susanne Popp (* 1955 ) is a German history teacher ; since 2006 she has held the chair for history didactics at the University of Augsburg .

Live and act

Susanne Popp studied history, German and social studies for teaching at grammar schools and passed the second state examination in 1983. After working as a grammar school teacher until 1987, she moved to the University of Passau as an academic adviser , where she received her doctorate in 1993 with a topic on the history of education . In the following years she worked as a consultant at the State Institute for School Education and Educational Research (ISB) in Munich; at the same time she taught half a post at Munich high schools.
From 1997 onwards, Susanne Popp worked as a research assistant at the chair for history didactics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg with Elisabeth Erdmann, until in 2000 she accepted a professorship for history and its didactics at the Weingarten University of Education . In 2002 she was offered the chair for History Didactics, Recent History at the University of Siegen , which she accepted. Since 2006 she has held the chair for history didactics at the University of Augsburg.
From 2007 to 2011 Susanne Popp was chairwoman of the Conference for History Didactics (KGD), and since 2011 she has been chairwoman of the International Society for History Didactics (ISHD) . Since 2011 she has been Advisory Professor of the East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai, in the Research Center for Comparative History Education.

Research priorities

Susanne Popp has a wide range of research focuses in the field of history didactics. Among other things, she deals with the integration of world and global historical perspectives in national history lessons, with the genre of “world history for children” as well as structures and changes in the picture inventories of current school books in Europe. In addition, she is interested in empirically investigating the effects of the Dutch curriculum concept ('10 tijdvakken ') on historical learning in primary schools. The European and international comparative approach is of particular interest. Further research focuses on the popularization of history in international history magazines (EU project EHISTO) and the development of European perspectives for local, regional and national museum objects (EU project EMEE).

  • Conference for History Didactics (KGD): Chairwoman of the Board (2007–2011)
  • International Society for History Didactics : Board member and responsible editor of the magazine (2005–2011), ISHD Chair (since 2011)
  • Activities as a scientific adviser to the German Historical Museum (since 2009), to the Council of Europe (Teaching Unit History) (since 2011), to the Israeli-Palestinian textbook project “Portrayal of the Other” (2009–2012), to the scientific journals “Yesterday & Today “(South Africa) and" Historical Encounters "(Australia).
