The conference for history didactics e. V. ( KGD ) is the scientific association of history teachers in Germany. The foundation of the association goes back to the beginning of the 1970s and an initiative of Walter Fürnrohrs (Erlangen-Nürnberg) . The association was constituted in 1995 in the legal form of a registered association . It is recognized as a non-profit organization.

Purpose and activity of the association

According to the statutes, the purpose of the KGD is to promote the scientific development of the history didactics discipline . This focuses on the conditions of history-related learning in general, the qualifications for historical thinking in schools and in adult education, and the culturally and politically effective social awareness of history ( history culture ).

The KGD takes a position on questions of the study of history as well as on questions of historical teaching in schools and adult education, promotes the exchange of information between the members. She holds and designed contacts with the associations of German Historians , the history teacher in Germany , the International Society for history teaching , responsible for teaching and teacher education ministries and the public and free institutions promoting science and the historical and political education.

The Conference for History Didactics has organized regular biennial meetings since 1973 (most recently in Berlin 2017, Aachen 2015, Göttingen 2013) and since 2001 also about every two years young talents' conferences.

In addition, the KGD is responsible for the publication of the Zeitschrift für Geschichtsdidaktik ( Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht , peer reviewed since 2008 ) and the supplements to the Zeitschrift für Geschichtsdidaktik (since 2010) as well as the series of writings on history didactics , which has appeared in 27 volumes since 1994 (since 2002 at Schulz-Kirchner Verlag ).

As part of the KGD, a number of working groups and working groups have been formed at the state level , which promote the purpose of the professional association on a topic and region-specific basis.

The association has 348 personal and corporate members (as of 2017). The KGD is headed by a five-person board. Founding chairman of the KGD as a legal association in 1995 was Uwe Uffelmann (University of Education Heidelberg). Michele Barricelli (Ludwig Maximilians University Munich) has headed the association since 2019 .
