Susmita Mohanty (* 1971 in the state of Odisha ) is an Indian entrepreneur and aerospace engineer . She is the founder of the first Indian space company Earth2Orbit .

Life

Her father Nilamani Mohanty worked for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). As a teenager, she sent letters with her own ideas about space travel to researchers around the world. She later wrote to foundations and well-known people around the world for support in order to finance her visit to the International Space University in Strasbourg , whereupon the science fiction writer and physicist Arthur C. Clarke made this visit possible for her and at the same time became her mentor. Susmita Mohanty holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Gujarat University and a master's degree in industrial design from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, and a master's degree in space science from the International Space University in Strasbourg. She also obtained a PhD in aerospace architecture in Sweden. Before starting as an entrepreneur, she worked for the International Space Station Program at Boeing in California and briefly worked for NASA Johnson . Mohanty was the only businesswoman to found space companies on three different continents. In 2001 she was one of the founders of Moonfront in San Francisco and in 2004 of Liquifer in Vienna. She has been CEO of Earth2Orbit since 2009 .

Act

Mohanty takes an active part in the public debate about the climate crisis . As she said, “You don't have to travel to the Arctic or Antarctic to see the effects of global warming . The unpredictability and effects of the climate can be seen all around us. "She was both worried and hopeful:" I fear that our home planet will no longer be particularly habitable in three to four generations. I hope that mankind will wake up to a gretaesque urgency for climate protection. ” Her goal is to use space research to solve the climate crisis. She said: "Space can play an important role in monitoring and understanding the effects of climate change."

In 2005 Susmita received the International Achievement Award in Washington . In 2012 she was elected to the Financial Times list of the "25 Indians to watch". In 2017, she was featured on the front cover of Fortune Magazine . The BBC show 100 Women portrayed her in 2019.
