The Sutro Tower is a 297.7 meter high transmission tower in San Francisco, California . The steel lattice tower is located on the 254 meter high Mount Sutro . Both the tower and the mountain bear the names of Adolph Sutro (1830–1898), a successful businessman and former mayor of San Francisco. The transmission tower has been the second tallest structure in the city since the Salesforce Tower was completed in 2018, but it towers above the famous Transamerica Pyramid skyscraper and is also the fourth tallest free-standing structure in California .
history
As early as 1966, a company was formed from several broadcasters to create space for a new broadcast tower by demolishing the mansion on Mount Sutro. Despite the height and proximity to San Francisco International Airport , the responsible authorities gave the green light for the building.
The transmission tower, which is not open to the public, was built between 1971 and 1972; The tower began broadcasting on July 4, 1973.
description
Building
The striking steel construction consists of three load-bearing pillars, which are connected and supported on five levels by cross braces. The transmission tower is built on a concrete foundation of around 3,750 cubic meters and a weight of 1,700 tons. It was designed in such a way that the center of gravity of the tower is below the ground in order to ensure better stability in the event of an earthquake . According to calculations, it would have survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake without damage.
Station table
Various antennas for broadcasting four radio and eleven television programs are installed on the top and on the intermediate floors. In addition, the tower serves as a transmitter for other communication media.
