Annabella , actually Suzanne Georgette Charpentier (born July 14, 1907 in Paris , † September 18, 1996 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ), was a French film actress .

Life

Suzanne Georgette Charpentier made her film debut in 1927 in Abel Gances Napoleon in a double role as violin Fleuri and as Desirée Clary . In the early 1930s she appeared in several French versions of German films. While filming Joe Mays Paris-Méditerranée , she met Jean Murat , whom she married.

The 30s were Annabella's main creative time. During this time she successfully appeared in films by Carmine Gallone , René Clair , Paul Fejos , Erik Charell and Nikolas Farkas . In 1936 she was awarded the Coppa Volpi at the Venice Film Festival for her role in Marcel L'Herbier's Between Evening and Morning ( Veille d'armes ) as Best Actress .

From 1936, she also starred in British productions, including the lead role in Gypsy Princess ( Wings of the Morning ) (1937) and next to Conrad Veidt in Victor Sjöström's Under the Red Robe ( Under the Red Robe ) (1937). In 1938 Annabella went to Hollywood , where her main production was Allan Dwan's monumental film Suez (1938) with Loretta Young and Tyrone Power . With Power, she had an affair that was widely covered by the gossip press. She married him in 1939. They had a daughter, Anne (* April 5, 1928; † 25 December 2011), the adopted Tyrone Power shortly after marrying and from 1954 to 1968 with the Austrian theater and film actor Oskar Werner was married .

In the 1940s, Annabella made only a few films. After divorcing Power in 1948, she returned to France. However, she did not succeed in building on her earlier successes. At the beginning of the 1950s she retired to a farm in the Pyrenees .

Annabella died of a heart attack in 1996 and was buried at the Cimetière de Passy in Paris .
