action
France in the 17th century. Under the rule of Louis XIII. the aristocrat Gil de Berault made a name for himself as a flaneur, gambler and daredevil. When he is said to have taken it too far, he is condemned to death for a duel. The king's almighty cardinal, Richelieu, literally pulls Gil away from under the gallows and engages him in his service. There de Berault is supposed to do the dirty work for the unscrupulous church representative. Richelieu is particularly interested in the apostate Protestant Huguenots , whose leader is said to be the Duke of Fiox. Moreover, the cardinal suspects the Duke of having been guilty of anti-monarchist activities. De Berault is supposed to kidnap the adversary and take him to Paris. He smuggled into the ducal castle as one of the guards and soon met the owner's sister, Marguerite de Fiox, with whom he fell head over heels in love. He has to discover that the duke is a real nobleman and that his employer is a cunning, power-obsessed villain. Thanks to Marguerite's intercession, Gil de Berault is spared Richelieu's revenge, and Richelieu even allows him to marry the lovely, noble maiden.

Reviews
“'Under the Red Robe' turns out to be surprisingly good entertainment. (…) The director doesn't waste a single move and gets straight to the point, maintains the tension and mixes funny comedy parts with exciting and dramatic moments. "
Paimann's film lists summed up: “The plot draws some effect from its historical characters and events of the time, but is staged quite rigidly towards dialogue effects and with too much use of studio decorations. Veidt impresses as an actor, while Massey's role (Richelieu) records something and Annabella is linguistically inhibited. Music (Benjamin) is used sparingly, photography and sound reproduction are balanced. "
“An entertaining costume film with Veidt as the hero, Annabella as the magical heroine and Massey as the cruel villain in the story about the French Cardinal Richelieu and his suppression of the Huguenots. Unusual sense of humor contributes to the joy of this flick. "
"Smart, unusual coat-and-sword film on the lines of 'The Prisoner of Zenda', modest, but very effective."
"An entertaining and eventful coat and epee film, which may lack the vigor and perfection of the French and American role models, but which impresses with the addition of dry, laconic humor."
