The Svarthornbotnen (Norwegian for black horn kettle ) is a large mountain kettle in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . In the Wohlthat massif, it is located immediately northeast of the Großer Schwarzhorn in the Middle Petermann chain .
The cauldron was discovered and mapped using aerial photographs during the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939) under the direction of Alfred Ritscher . Norwegian cartographers, who also named it, mapped it on the basis of aerial photographs and measurements of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960).
