Sven-Erik Westerberg

Sven-Erik Westerberg (born January 4, 1925 in Bollstabruk , † April 25, 1959 ) was a Swedish football player and official. He played two caps for the Swedish national team and was a member of the organizing committee for the 1958 World Cup .

Career

After Westerberg started playing football in his hometown, he moved to Sundsvall to do his military service and then work there as a sports journalist. Therefore, he joined the local Kubikenborgs IF , with which he entered underclass. In 1951 he fell in a friendly game of a regional selection against the Brazilian team Flamengo Rio de Janeiro on the people in charge of Helsingborgs IF , who brought him to the Allsvenskan . There he convinced and came in the course of the first division season 1951/52 to 17 league games in which he scored two goals.

He also drew the attention of the national team's selection committee, so that he made his international debut on March 26, 1952. In the 1-0 win over France at the Prinzenparkstadion in Paris , he scored the decisive goal in front of 35,779 spectators shortly before the end.

In the summer of 1952 Westerberg moved to the first division promoted AIK . For his new club he played irregularly as a half-striker over the next two and a half years.

In the fall of 1954, Westerberg ended his active career at AIK after 28 league games in which he had scored four goals. As a sports journalist for Idrottsbladet , he was in regular contact with Svenska Fotbollförbundet . Therefore he was involved in the preparations for the World Cup final tournament in Sweden in the summer of 1958 and was a member of the organizing committee.

In 1959 Westerberg died at the age of 34. He died of a brain tumor.
