Sven Backhaus (born June 1, 1968 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German soccer player .
Career
Backhaus moved from VfB 03 Hilden to the youth team at Fortuna Düsseldorf at the age of twelve and was then pulled up to the pros as captain of the A youth team. Between 1986 and 1990 he played 21 Bundesliga games for Fortuna Düsseldorf as a defender . As a 19-year-old, he made his debut on matchday 33 of the 1986/87 Bundesliga season in a 2-1 home win against Werder Bremen in Düsseldorf , but his club's relegation to the second Bundesliga was already sealed at this point. In the 1988/89 season Backhaus was with Fortuna champions of the second division and celebrated the return to the Bundesliga.
In 1990 his contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf expired and Sven Backhaus took a break from football. He backpacked Southeast Asia for several months, toured Thailand and later Laos . Back in Germany, he joined Energie Cottbus in what was then the East German league , where he played as a libero for half a year . Backhaus then studied business administration for a few semesters in Düsseldorf before he was brought back to Fortuna Düsseldorf by trainer Aleksandar Ristić . After the crash of Fortuna in 1993 in the third-class Oberliga Nordrhein , he managed the direct return to the second division with the club in 1994. In 1995 he moved to SG Wattenscheid 09 , but with the Backhaus again had to accept relegation to the third division.
In the summer of 1996 Backhaus was brokered to Selangor FA in Malaysia for two games . Back in Germany he played for Wuppertaler SV and from 1999 to 2001 for the second division Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . In the 2nd Bundesliga, he played a total of 159 games as a defender between 1987 and 2001 and scored eleven goals. Sven Backhaus ended his active career in 2006 at Cronenberger SC .
In the meantime he worked as a freelancer for the West German Broadcasting Corporation and prepared reports for the sports department. He is currently active in the distribution of artificial turf.
