Sven Beckert (* 1965 ) is a German historian . He is primarily concerned with the history of the United States in the 19th century, the history of capitalism and global history . Beckert is Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University .

Beckert is the brother of the sociologist Jens Beckert . Beckert studied history, sociology and political science at the University of Hamburg and at Columbia University in New York City , where he received his doctorate. He was funded by the German National Academic Foundation. He then worked as Newcomen Fellow at the Harvard Business School and accepted following the call as an Assistant Professor at Harvard University. In 1999 he received the Aby Warburg Foundation Science Prize . In 2000 Beckert was promoted to Dunwalke Associate Professor, in 2003 to Full Professor . Since 2008 he has been Laird Bell Professor of History. In the same year Beckert was a fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies . In 2011 he received a Guggenheim grant and in 2018 he was a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies. In 2015 he was awarded the Bancroft Prize for Empire of Cotton . In 2017 he won the Premio Cherasco Storia with L'Impero del Cotone . Sven Beckert is Vice Chairman of the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History and the Program on the Study of Capitalism.
