Sven Hammer

Sven Hammer (* 1969 in Heilbronn ) is a German veterinarian , conservationist and director of the Görlitz zoo .

Hammer graduated from high school in Besigheim and studied veterinary medicine in Giessen . From 2000 to 2011 he was the director and chief veterinarian of Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation in Qatar ; one of his tasks there was the supervision of the Spix's Macaw project. In 2011 he had a teaching position at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Zurich , where he represented the head of the clinic for zoo, pet and wild animals in his sabbatical year. In September 2011 he became director of the Görlitz zoo, replacing Axel Gebauer .

Hammer has been the first deputy chairman of the Zoological Society for Species and Populations Protection eV since 2012. He is also a member of the Taxon Advisory Group for Antelopes and Giraffes of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), whose aim is to ensure healthy, self-sustaining and genetically diverse antelopes -, okapi and giraffe populations in European zoos. He is also Chairman of the Board of the Association of Zoo Veterinarians .
