The Swalmener Mühle ( Dutch Molen op de Swalm ) was a water mill in the Roermond district of Swalmen , with at times two undershot water wheels .

geography

The Swalmener Mühle is located on the lower reaches of the Schwalm , in the Molenstraat in the Swalmen district in the city of Roermond in the Dutch province of Limburg . Above is the Dilborn mill , below is the mouth of the Schwalm. The water level of the Schwalm is 24 m above sea level.

The Swalmener Mühle is the last mill on the Schwalm before the mouth of the Schwalm.

history

Today's Swalmener Mühle was built in 1789 in the "Ankerjaartal" on the Molenstraat and is the successor to a grain mill that was demolished on the same site in the 17th century. The new mill was equipped with two water wheels, each driving a grain mill and an oil mill for processing rapeseed oil . The mill that is still in existence used to be the property of the " Count Wolff Metternich family ".

The mill could only work until 1945 when the water wheels were destroyed by grenades. The last “Molenbaas” (mill master) was Lei Vallen. In 1953 the building was converted for residential purposes.
