Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburgh (born April 21, 1571 in Leiden , † October 16, 1638 ibid) was a Dutch history painter who specialized in scenic depictions of hell and was one of Rembrandt van Rijn's teachers .

Jacob van Swanenburgh was one of three sons of the Leiden architect and painter Isaac Nicolai van Swanenburg (1538-1614). The father enjoyed influence and prestige in the city, was appointed councilor in 1582 and mayor of Leiden in 1596. He taught his sons as a painter and enabled Jacob to stay longer in Italy, where he worked in Venice and Naples .

In 1608 he was reported by the archbishop's court because he should have sold pictures on a Sunday. In truth, however, it was about a picture called “The Witches Dance”, in which witches were depicted in a reminiscence of Hieronymus Bosch who danced in hell, which had provoked the displeasure of the church.

In 1609 van Swanenburg married Margarita Cordona, with whom he lived in Naples for another eight years. In 1617 he returned to Leiden and set up a studio in which he also taught. His best known student was Rembrandt van Rijn , who probably took lessons with him from 1620 to 1624.
