Swantibor II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swantibor II. , Also Swantibor IV. , (* Around 1408/1410, † 1436 at the latest) was a Duke of Pomerania from the Greifenhaus . He ruled in part of Pomerania-Wolgast from 1425 together with his brother Barnim VIII , after a further division then alone in a smaller part, which included the area of the island of Rügen and the city of Stralsund .

Life

Swantibor II was the youngest son of Duke Wartislaw VIII of Pomerania-Wolgast and his wife Agnes von Sachsen-Lauenburg. He had two older brothers, Wartislaw (* around 1398; † 1414/1415) and Barnim VIII (* around 1406; † 1451), as well as a sister, Sophia († after 1453).

When his father Wartislaw VIII died in 1415, his widow Agnes von Sachsen-Lauenburg was initially the guardian of her surviving sons Barnim VIII and Swantibor II - the eldest son Wartislaw had died before his father - as well as the sons of her deceased Brother-in-law Barnim VI. , her nephews Wartislaw IX. and Barnim VII. The Duchess Agnes was assisted by a Regency Council under Kord Bonow . When all heirs to the throne came of age, the Duchy of Pomerania-Wolgast was divided in 1425. Barnim VIII and Swantibor II received the territory of the Principality of Rügen . Later (possibly not until 1435) both divided their territory further: the younger Swantibor II received the area of the island of Rügen and the city of Stralsund , the older Barnim VIII received the rest of the territory of the Principality of Rügen on the mainland ( Pommern-Barth ).

As far as is known, Duke Swantibor II was not married. The year of his death is unknown. The historian Adolf Häckermann assumed in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (1875) that Swantibor II had died in 1440. According to the research of the historian Adolf Hofmeister, however, Swantibor II probably died between 1432 and 1436.

It is not known where Duke Swantibor II was buried. The Neuenkamp monastery and the Franciscan monastery in Stralsund are mentioned .

After the death of Duke Swantibor II, his territory fell to his older brother, Duke Barnim VIII.

count

The counting of the members of the Greifenhaus has always been involved. There has been an inequality here from age that causes some confusion. The more modern approach basically only counts those relatives of the closer Greifenhaus who have reached adulthood . Then this Swantibor is counted as Swantibor II. If, on the other hand, one counts all members of the Greifenhaus, the result is the count as Swantibor IV , which was to be found in older literature and can still be found, for example, in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .
