The Swatow was a German cargo ship .

history

The Swatow was built in Hamburg in 1889. The ship was named after the port city of Swatow in southern China. It was initially registered with the DSG shipping company in Hamburg and, since 1895, with the Hamburg-based shipping company Chines Küstenschiffahrt AG. The Swatow was on the move in the Chinese coastal service.

In November 1897 the freighter was confiscated by the Imperial Navy for tasks in the occupation of the Chinese Kiautschou Bay by the German armed forces. In 1898 the cargo ship was returned to its shipping company.

In 1900, the Chinese Küstenschiffahrt AG sold the ship to a Japanese shipping company that operated the freighter under the name Swatow Maru . Since 1927 the ship has been called Zuhio Maru and since 1937 Asahi Maru . The whereabouts of the ship are not known.
