Gerti Kappel

Gerti Kappel (born April 15, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian computer scientist and university lecturer . Since 2001 she has been a professor at the Technical University of Vienna , where she also as a part of since 2016 dean team serves the faculty of computer science.

Professional development

Gerti Kappel completed her master's degree in business IT at the University of Vienna in 1983 , and in 1984 she received the academic degree Dipl.-Ing. for computer science at the Vienna University of Technology. There she also did her doctorate in 1987 and five years later was habilitated at the University of Vienna in the field of "Computer Science" . From 1987 to 1989 Kappel was a researcher at the Center Universitaire d'Informatique in Geneva, until 2001 Professor of Computer Science and Head of the Information Systems Department at the University of Linz . She then returned to the Technical University of Vienna as a professor and took over the chairmanship of the Business Informatics Group within the Institute for Information Systems Engineering.

Her research focuses on the improvement of software for web applications, Kappel published a book on Unified Modeling Language together with colleagues . She is also the mother of two children and is repeatedly asked in interviews about the "compatibility of academic career and family". Kappel is also intensely involved in the advancement of women, developed the "FIT - Women in Technology" program for the University of Linz and headed the "WIT - Internet Technology College for Women Scientists".

In 2020 she succeeded Hannes Werthner as dean of the Faculty of Computer Science.

Awards

In 2019, Gerti Kappel was awarded the "Digital Woman Leader" special prize by Federal Minister Margarete Schramböck .
