Hannes Werthner

Hannes Werthner (born November 30, 1954 in Güssing or Oberschützen ) is an Austrian computer scientist and university professor . Since 2006 he has been a professor at the Technical University of Vienna , where he also served as dean of the Faculty of Computer Science from 2016 to 2019 .

Life

Hannes Werthner studied computer science at the Technical University of Vienna, graduating in 1979 with a degree in engineering. In 1981 he received his doctorate as Dr. techn. , In 1994 he completed his habilitation in the field of applied computer science . From 1991 he was an assistant at the Institute for Statistics, Operations Research (OR) and Computer Processes at the University of Vienna , from 1994 lecturer for applied computer science. In 1999/2000 he was professor and head of the department for business informatics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business , then until 2004 professor for computer science and e-commerce at the University of Trento , where he also headed the e-commerce and tourism research lab (eCTRL). He was then appointed professor for business informatics and e-tourism at the University of Innsbruck . In 2006 he moved to the Institute for Software Technology and Interactive Systems at the Technical University of Vienna as Professor of E-Commerce. From 2016 he was also dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at the TU Vienna. Gerti Kappel succeeded him in this role in 2019 .

In his academic work, he deals with e-commerce as well as recommendation services (recommender systems) and e-tourism. From 1989 to 1991 he developed the Tyrolean tourism information system TIS for Tirol Werbung . From 1997 to 2000 he was President of the International Federation for IT and Tourism . In 2004 he was given responsibility for the implementation of a European tourism portal financed by the EU. In addition, in 2000 he co-founded the E-commerce Competence Center (EC3), a center for research in the field of e-commerce and from 2004 to 2006 scientific coordinator of the Austrian Network for e-tourism .

The Hannes Werthner Tourism and Technology Lifetime Achievement Award , which has been presented annually by the International Federation for Information Technologies and Travel & Tourism (IFITT) since 2011, is named after him . Prize winners were Arno Ebner (2011), Inkeri Starry (2012), Daniel R. Fesenmaier (2013, Temple University), Pauline Sheldon (2014, University of Hawaii), Josef Mazanec (2015), Gert van der Pijl (2016, Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Rodolfo Baggio (2017, Bocconi University).

In August 2017, his candidacy on the Peter Pilz list was announced in the 2017 National Council election . He ran for ninth place on the federal list, but did not make it into the National Council.
