The Sweetwater River is a river in southern San Diego in the state of California . It rises in the Cuyamaca Mountains and flows 88 km (55 mi) into San Diego Bay . There are two reservoirs along the river. The Loveland Lake is located 8 km south of the city of Alpine . The Loveland Dam was completed in 1945 and the reservoir has a storage volume of 31,000,000 m³. The Sweetwater Reservoir is located 14 km southeast of San Diego. The Sweetwater Dam has a storage volume of 35,000,000 m³ and was completed in 1888. It was added to the List of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2005.
