Swinnerton Ledge is a 1500 m high mountain ridge with a flattened summit in the East Antarctic Coatsland . In the Shackleton Range, it marks the eastern end of the Read Mountains .
Aerial photographs were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy . The British Antarctic Survey carried out surveys between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it on January 5, 1972 after the British geologist and paleontologist Henry Hurd Swinnerton (1876-1966) of the University Colledge of Nottingham , from 1938 to 1940 President of the Geological Society of London .
