Swoszowice is a spa town ( Osiedle Uzdrowisko Swoszowice ) in the south of the city of Krakow in Poland , which is eponymous for the urban district X Swoszowice .

history

The place was first mentioned on March 12, 1362 as Swosszow . The possessive name, derived from the personal name Swosz , was soon replaced by the patronymic form with the suffix - (ow) ice.

From 1422 sulfur was mined there.

Politically, the place was initially part of the Kingdom of Poland (from 1569 in the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania ), Krakow Voivodeship , Szczyrzyc District. When Poland was first partitioned in 1772, Swoszowice became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804).

The spa was founded by Feliks Radwański (1756–1826) between 1800 and 1831. The bathhouse from that time is still in operation today. In the 19th century it became one of the most popular health resorts in Poland, especially among Kraków's citizens. There, u. a. Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz and Hugo Kołłątaj . The geology of Swoszowice was described by Stanisław Staszic . The landscape was artistically immortalized by Hipolit Lipiński . Edmund von Neusser was born in Swoszowice in 1855 . Many Jews also settled there and built some synagogues . In the late 19th century, a bastion of the Krakow Fortress was built.

In 1900 the municipality of Swoszowice in the Podgórze district had an area of ​​224 hectares with 122 houses and 871 inhabitants, of whom all residents were Polish-speaking, except for 1224 Roman Catholics , 90 Jews lived there , the estate: 80 hectares, 10 houses, 44 Polish-speaking residents, 29 Roman Catholic, 15 Jews.

After the end of World War I in 1918 and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , the village became part of Poland. In 1921 Swoszowice had 146 buildings and 985 inhabitants.

It was incorporated into Krakow in 1973. On September 26, 2006, the district was spun off as the first and only administrative unit in Krakow from the city district of the same name under the name Osiedle Uzdrowisko Swoszowice in order to facilitate the activity of the spa. The former village now has around 3000 inhabitants.
