Syd Luyt

Syd Luyt (actually Thomas Sydney Andrew Luyt; born December 11, 1925 in Germiston ; † June 4, 2010 ) was a South African marathon runner .

In 1947 he won the Durban Athletic Club marathon in 2:39:27 h. The following year he qualified second in the South African Championship in 2:38:44 h for the 1948 Olympic Games in London, where he was sixth in 2:38:11 h.

In 1949 he won a marathon in Queenstown in 2:34:17 h. At the British Empire Games in Auckland in 1950 he won silver in 2:37:03 h.

The national championship title in 1951 was followed by an eleventh place at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki with his personal best of 2:32:41 h. In 1953 he finished second in the Comrades Marathon over 87 km and triumphed in the Jackie Gibson Marathon.
