Sylvia Wetzel

Sylvia Wetzel (born July 5, 1949 in Wolfach in the Black Forest ) is a Buddhist feminist who is known in Buddhist circles in Germany because she teaches the topics of Buddhism , meditation and spirituality as a woman for women.

Live and act

Sylvia Wetzel studied political science and Slavic studies in Heidelberg from 1968 . At that time she also became politically active, especially early on in the women's movement. She had her first encounter with Tibetan Buddhism in 1977 in Dharamsala . She became a student of Thubten Yeshe and later also of Zopa Rinpoche ( Gelug tradition). She had further Buddhist studies from various Buddhist schools with Prabhasa Dharma Roshi , Ayya ​​Khema , Akong Rinpoche , Rigdzin Shikpo (Michael Hookham). She has been a member, employee and advisory board of the German Buddhist Union (DBU) since 1984 and was its spokesperson from 1985 to 1993. Sylvia Wetzel gives meditation courses, gives lectures, writes books on Buddhism and is considered a pioneer of a feminist approach in the interpretation of Buddhist teachings. She mainly lectures in Germany and Spain .

The international Buddhist women's association Sakyadhita was founded in 1987 as a result of the historically first nuns conference in Bodhgaya (North India ) by the initiators and participants of this gathering, including from Germany by Ayya Khema, Sylvia Wetzel and Jampa Tsedroen (Carola Roloff) and Karma Lekshe Tsomo ( USA ), the Bhikkhuni Kusuma (formerly Dr. Kusuma Devendra, Sri Lanka ) and Bhikkhuni Dhammananda (formerly Dr. Chatsumarn Kabilsingh, Thailand ).
