Sylwester Mirosław Czopek (born July 1, 1958 in Bełżyce ) is a Polish archaeologist . In 2016 he was elected rector of the University of Rzeszów for a four-year cadence .

Life

In 1981 he completed his archeology studies at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin . From 1981 he was employed at the District Museum in Rzeszów. He received his doctorate in 1989 from the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences . From 1991 to 2008 he was director of the district museum and from 1997 he also worked at the city's pedagogical college, which later became part of the newly founded Rzeszów University. His habilitation took place in 1998 at the Faculty of History at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He was co-founder of the Institute of Archeology at Rzeszów University and its first director from 1999 to 2008. In 2003 he was appointed professor. From 2008 to 2012 he was dean of the faculty for sociology and history. When the rector of the University of Rzeszów Aleksander Bobko changed to the Polish Ministry of Education , Sylwester Czopek took over the business of the rector of the university as deputy in 2015, and in 2016 he was elected rector for a 4-year cadence.

Scientific activity

Sylwester Czopek has specialized in the Bronze and Early Iron Ages . He has a total of over 200 publications, including nine books. At the Polish Academy of Sciences he was head of the Commission for the Bronze and Early Iron Ages from 2008 to 2011, then head of the Department for the Protection of Archaeological Heritage until 2014.
