Symplast
The symplast is the totality of all protoplasts connected via plasmodesmata in a plant . This is also known as the symplastic space . The symplastic transport of low molecular weight substances such as molecules , phytohormones or metabolites takes place across cells via the plasmodesmata .
Opposite the symplast is the apoplast , which represents the extracellular space. Together they form the cellular space of a plant tissue .
