Former synagogue in Bad Orb

The synagogue in Bad Orb , a town in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse , was inaugurated in 1870 or 1871. The building at Solpatz 1, which has been heavily modified today, is a protected architectural monument .

history

A prayer hall or synagogue was set up in Orb by the end of the 18th century at the latest . Around 1850 the Jewish community planned a new building and bought two houses on Solplatz. These were converted into a synagogue.

During the Nazi era , the synagogue was sold to a non-Jewish family in August 1938 in connection with the dissolution of the Jewish community. As a result, the synagogue was spared from destruction during the November pogrom in 1938 . The synagogue building was converted into a residential and commercial building.

description

The two-storey massive building had its main entrance on Solplatz. A staircase led from the entrance area to the gallery and the teacher's apartment on the upper floor. The ritual bath ( mikveh ) was located in the basement . On the first floor was the classroom to the left of the entrance and the prayer room to the right.
