The synagogue in Heßheim , a municipality in the east of Rhineland-Palatinate , was built as such in 1830, sold in 1911 and rebuilt by 1912. The synagogue was in the main street.

history

For the time after the destruction of Heßheim in the Palatinate War of Succession, there is evidence of a Jewish family in the Electoral Palatinate town. A synagogue could have existed as early as 1749. The number of Jewish residents rose to 72 in 11 families in the Bavarian period by 1848. In April 1830, the merchant Moritz Hirschler bought a small house "for 80 guilders" for the Jewish community. It is referred to as a synagogue in 1835 and recorded in 1840 in the “Liquidation and Declaration of Land Property Status”, the original cadastre , under house number 79 and plan number 49. At that time it was known as the “Jewish School on the Main Street” (prayer house or synagogue). The floor area of the building was 34 square meters. Families from the neighboring towns of Beindersheim and Heuchelheim , where the Jewish cemetery was located, also attended the service in Heßheim.

As early as 1880, the village's Jewish community had halved to 40 people of Jewish faith within 30 years. In 1880 the family of the country merchant still lived in Beindersheim, while Heuchelheim no longer had any residents of the Jewish faith. A few years later, only high festivals could be celebrated in the synagogue, as only on these days was the minyan reached by ten religiously responsible men. In 1900, the Jewish sold their 140 square meter portion of the yard to the local community. With this, Heßheim acquired the access to the former fire brigade equipment house built in 1883.

In May 1911, the community of only 20 people was dissolved and the building was demolished and rebuilt by November 26, 1912. Half a house was built on the small property , which was later extended to the rear. The Protestant Christ Church was built on the neighboring property on Hauptstrasse in the 1950s.
