Synagogue (Lauingen)
The former synagogue in Lauingen , a town in the Swabian district of Dillingen on the Danube , is located at Hirschstrasse 19, the former Judengasse .
history
At the end of the 13th century, Jews can be found in Lauingen for the first time. The Jews in Lauingen were also affected by the persecution of the Jews in 1298 and the time of the plague in 1348/49. After 1367/68 and in the first half of the 15th century there was again a Jewish community in the city. The Jewish families lived in Judengasse (today's Hirschstrasse), where the community facilities such as the synagogue (called “Judenschule”, 1417) were located. However, some questions about this building as a synagogue remain unanswered.
After the Lauing Jews were again expelled in connection with the expulsions of Jews from the Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut in 1450/51, the synagogue fell to the Lauing Hospital. In the 19th and 20th In the 19th century nothing is known of any longer Jewish settlements in the city.
Building
The former synagogue is a two-storey saddle roof building , which is now used as a residential building after changing ownership several times. Above the entrance portal of the renovated building there is a Hebrew portal inscription in abbreviations from the time of the synagogue , which reads: This is the gate to the Lord ( Psalm 118 : 20).
