Synagogue in Žatec

The synagogue in Žatec (German Saaz ), a town in the Louny district of Ústecký kraj in the northern Czech Republic , was built in 1871/72. The derelict synagogue has been a protected cultural monument since 1988 .

history

The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Johann Staniek . The solemn inauguration took place in the spring of 1872 by Rabbi Dr. Abraham Frank .

The synagogue building was partially destroyed by fire during the November pogrom in 1938 and in the following years served as a military hospital and, after the end of the war, as a warehouse for agricultural equipment. After the Second World War , services were held again in the building next to the synagogue until 1954.

The synagogue building has now been renovated from the outside and serves as a museum about Jewish life in the region.
