The synagogue in the small town of Deidesheim in the Palatinate was the place of worship for the Jewish community in Deidesheim. It is located at Bahnhofstrasse 19 and today belongs to the city of Deidesheim. The former synagogue is used for cultural events.

architecture

The building is a rectangular structure with two by three window axes with a hipped roof and plastered exterior over a high plinth made of sandstone blocks. The hall inside is structured by weak stucco pilaster strips that support a multi-profiled cornice . The windows are spanned by round arches, which immediately reveal the former synagogue as a sacred building . Because of its neo-Romanesque elements, the synagogue is typical of those from the mid-19th century.

history

The synagogue was built in 1852. The Jewish community of Deidesheim had previously bought the property in a convenient location after the previous prayer hall could no longer be used due to its disrepair .

Because of the declining number of parishioners, at the beginning of the 20th century it became increasingly difficult for the Jewish community to finance the maintenance of the synagogue. This fact led to the sale of the synagogue in late 1936, which presumably saved the building from being destroyed during the November 1938 pogroms.

After it was sold, the building served as a warehouse for several decades . On June 2, 1987, the building was listed and bought by the city of Deidesheim in 1992.

With the support of the Friends of the former Deidesheim Synagogue e. V. has been gradually refurbished since 1995 . On May 2, 2004, after completion of the renovation work, the building was inaugurated as a cultural center in the castle park - a former synagogue and has since been used for cultural events such as concerts, readings and smaller exhibitions. The small courtyard in front of the building was named in 2014 after Oswald Feis from Deidesheim, who was murdered by the National Socialists.

On August 21, 2016, the synagogue was badly damaged in a fire that had spread from a neighboring building to the synagogue. The roof structure burned out completely. The synagogue was then restored and the renovation work was completed in October 2018.
