The synagogue in Höchst im Odenwald , a municipality in the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse (Germany), was built in 1903/04. The synagogue was at Wilhelminenstrasse 2, today Montmelianer Platz.

history

Since the old synagogue was in a dilapidated condition, a new building was built on the site of the old synagogue according to plans by Darmstadt architect Fleckenstein. The representative synagogue in neo-Romanesque and Moorish style was built from February 12 to 14, 1904 by the regional rabbi Dr. Marx inaugurated. The two corner towers with onion attachments were striking. The synagogue had 84 male and 66 female places.

The school building had stood at the rear of the synagogue since 1918.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated and looted by SA men. The furnishings and cult objects were set on fire on the sports field. The top of the gable with the tablets of the law and the onion domes were demolished and the roof was damaged by fire. During the Second World War , the building was used for air defense exercises. In 1946 the synagogue building was demolished.

Commemoration

Since November 1985 a memorial has been commemorating the Jewish community and its synagogue.
