History and description

Postcard with the synagogue in Altdorf

A first synagogue , probably from the 18th century, was in disrepair in 1846. As early as 1841 the Jewish community had decided to build a new synagogue and set up a synagogue building fund for this purpose . Another 25 years would pass before the synagogue was built. The synagogue was inaugurated on February 21, 1868.

The synagogue was 19 meters long, 10.20 meters wide and 13.60 meters high. It was built in the oriental style with a three-part portal and three large horseshoe arches. All windows on the gable and on the sides of the building showed horseshoe arches. There were two twin windows on each floor along the long sides. On the top of the gable of the entrance facade were the bid boards . The following inscriptions in Hebrew were placed above the entrance :

  • שתולים בבית יהוה בחצרות אלהינו יפריחו: "Planted in the house of the Eternal they spring up in the courts of God" (Psalm 92.14)
  • זה־השער ליהוה צדיקים יבאו בו׃ "This is the gate to the Eternal, righteous people pass through it" (Psalm 118,20) and
  • מה־ידידות משכנותיך יהוה צבאות׃ “How lovely are your homes, Eternal of hosts” (Psalm 84: 2).

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom of 1938 , SA men came to Altdorf at noon on November 10 after the synagogue in Ettenheim had been demolished . Here they destroyed the interior of the synagogue, the stone command panels were knocked off the gable and thus destroyed.

During the Second World War the synagogue building was used as a prison camp. On February 26, 1941, the political community bought the synagogue property.

After 1945

After 1945 the synagogue was confiscated by the Allies and handed over to the JRSO Jewish property management company. On April 30, 1952, the synagogue building was sold again to the municipality of Altdorf.

In 1950 the building was rented to a cigar manufacturer. In October 1952, the Altdorf community began to convert the former synagogue into a factory building. The characteristic windows disappeared and were replaced by rectangular windows. The left and right entrances were bricked up and the middle one was enlarged. The portal inscriptions were chipped off. A false ceiling was installed at the height of the women's gallery . From March 1, 1953, the building was leased to a chemical factory. In 1970 the Altdorf community sold the building to a commercial enterprise.

Todays use

The former synagogue has been used as the Altdorf art gallery since 1998/99 .

In 2018, a support association for the former synagogue today Kunsthalle Altdorf was founded with the aim of preserving the listed building.
