Minden synagogue

The Minden Synagogue is a Jewish assembly and place of worship for prayer , scripture study and instruction and is the seat of today's Jewish community in Minden and the surrounding area . The synagogue is located in the upper old town of the East Westphalian city of Minden .

history

Today's synagogue was built in 1958 by the architect Karl Gerle from Recklinghausen next to the site of the former synagogue , which was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 , in a unit consisting of a parish hall, connecting wing and subsequent synagogue building. This made Minden one of the first cities in Germany to have a synagogue inaugurated again after the Second World War . The old synagogue, which was destroyed during the Night of the Pogroms and not rebuilt, was inaugurated on March 24, 1865. Demolition costs for the ruins destroyed by the fire on November 10, 1938 had to be borne by the Jewish community. The demolition of the ruin took place under the eyes of the German population and under the political leadership of the National Socialists.

architecture

For the new building the entire inventory had to be procured: Torah , Torah ark , Toraschmuck, silver Kiddush cup , silver Hawdalabecher , the Sabbath candlesticks , the menorah and much more. The entrance area of the building is designed as a memorial room that commemorates the persecution during the National Socialist era.
