Synechococcus is a genus within the cyanobacteria . The name is derived from the ancient Greek συνέχεος 'connected', and κόκκος '' core ''. The species of the genus live in planktonic form in the marine pelagic. There, the photoautotrophic genuscontributes to primary productionthrough photosynthesis . Some species are also found in fresh water. As a model organism in biology, the genome of a species, S. elongatus , has been sequenced.

features

Synechococcus species are found unicellular (singly), rarely in pairs or in small groups. The cells have no or only very thin jelly shells, no gas vesicles and are colored blue-green or red. Marine representatives of the genus show motility . As the cells contain the pigment phycoerythrin in addition to chlorophyll , they show red autofluorescence when stimulated accordingly . They are ovoid or cylindrical in shape and between 0.6  µm and 1.5  µm in size.
