Syon Park House Estate and the surrounding 80 acre park is located in Isleworth in the Hounslow district of London on the banks of the River Thames .

history

The name Syon is derived from the biblical Zion (Latin Sion). Originally there was a monastery (Syon Abbey) at this point, which was built under Henry V in 1415, but was demolished again under Henry VIII in 1539.

In the course of secularization , the property became the property of Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset , uncle and regent of the minor Edward VI. Edward Seymour had Syon House built in the Italian Renaissance style on the foundations of the old monastery church between 1547 and his execution in 1552 . After Seymour's death, his opponent John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland , became the owner of Syon Park House Estate. His son Guildford Dudley later married Lady Jane Gray , a great-granddaughter of Henry VII . Lady Jane Gray was queen for a few days in 1553 and was executed with her husband Guilford Dudley the following year .

Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland , bought Syon House in 1594 and has been in the family ever since. Sir Hugh Smithon married into the family in 1750 and was promoted to Duke of Northumberland in 1766 . Together with his wife Elisabeth Seymour, they commissioned Robert Adam to renovate the house and Capability Brown to redesign the park.

Architecture and equipment

Robert Adams' plans for the conversion in the classicism style could only be implemented in five large rooms on the west, south and east sides of the house. The highlight is the great entrance hall with black and white marble floor and copies of the Apollo Belvedere and the Dying Gaul . Other rooms are designed in the Etruscan and Roman styles. In the dining room, the medallion ornaments on the ceiling are reflected with similar variations in the carpet. In 1769 the work was stopped. A central rotunda, which Adam had planned for the inner courtyard, was not implemented for cost reasons.

In addition to valuable furniture, Syon Park House Estate houses an extensive collection of paintings. Here Peter Lely , Van Dyck and Rubens are among the most famous artists.

Syon Park

Syon Park runs on the banks of the Thames. Across the river is the Kew Gardens Botanical Gardens . The park, designed by Capability Brown from 1760 onwards, is now more in the style of the 19th century. There are over 200 different tree species, some of which are very rare, in the park. Next to a lake, a fountain with a figure of Mercury according to Giambologna loosens up the complex. The large glass and steel greenhouse was built from 1828 to 1830 according to plans by Charles Fowler and was the model for London's Crystal Palace . Syon Park House Estate and Park are open to the public and a popular destination for Londoners.
