The Syrtis Hill is a striking, snow-free, conical, terraced and around 500 m high hill on the east coast of the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . It rises on the northwest corner of the Two Step Cliffs above the Viking Valley .
The hill is an important snow-free landmark and the site of biological and geological research. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1993 after the Syrtis Major , a large plateau on the planet Mars , which the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens first described in 1659.
