Szabolcs (name)
Szabolcs [ ˈsɒbolʧ ] is a Hungarian masculine given name. While it can be determined from the sound structure and by comparison with other Hungarian names and their etymology that the name is of Turkish origin , its meaning (and etymology) is not known. According to the tradition of the Gesta Hungarorum by Anonymous, the name was borne by a Hungarian tribal prince (around 900), who is said to have given the name to Szabolcs County and the village of the same name. The name regained popularity in the 19th century at the time of national romanticism (similar to Germanic names (e.g. Siegfried, Gudrun etc.) in the German-speaking area), since then it has been quite popular and widespread again in Hungary.
