Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg [ ˈsɒbolʧ ˈsɒtmaːr ˈbɛrɛɡ ] ( German  Saboltsch-Sathmar-Berg ) is a county (administrative district) in northeastern Hungary . It borders with Romania , Slovakia (near Záhony ) and the Ukraine, as well as the Hajdú-Bihar and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén counties . It has an area of ​​5,935.79 km² and a population of 563,075 (2016). The county seat is Nyíregyháza .

geography

The area is flat and forms part of the Great Hungarian Plain ( Puszta ). It is traversed by the Tisza , which makes a sharp turn in the county from northwest to south.

structure

With the government ordinance No. 218/2012 of August 13, 2012, the statistical small regions (Hungarian kistérség ) were abolished on January 1, 2013 and replaced by an approximately equal number of districts (Hungarian járás ). The small areas were retained for a while for planning and statistical purposes, but were finally abolished on February 25, 2014. Until the dissolution there were 12 small areas in the county. Only four small areas remained unchanged in their borders during the administrative reform.

History and culture

The county emerged from the union of the Szabolcs county with the remnants of the Szatmár counties (the main part of which is in the Satu Mare county in Romania) and Bereg (the former capital of which is Beregszász (now Berehove ) in the Ukraine and the area around Mukachevo in the Transcarpathian region forms).

Museums

The State Directorate of Museums of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County is responsible for 12 county museums . The county seat is the city of Nyíregyháza .
