history
In 1315 King Karl Robert granted the town market rights. There is evidence that a county meeting took place here in 1323. Due to the favorable geographical location, the place developed into an economic center. In 1457 the Kállay family received royal permission to build a castle. This was burned down by the Turks in 1556 and then rebuilt as a castle.
In 1603 Stephan Bocskai moved to Heiducken . After his death the Heiducken were resettled by Gabriel Báthory to Hajdúböszörmény .
At the end of the Thirty Years War , Georg I. Rákóczi captured Naygkálló in 1644.
During his struggle for freedom , Franz II Rákóczi captured the castle in July 1703 and signed his declaration of independence here. In 1704 the castle was ordered to be razed, but this was not implemented until 1709.
From 1747 to 1867 it was the seat of Szabolcs County . With the relocation of the county seat to Nyíregyháza , the place lost its town charter. In 1989 Nagykálló was restored to town.
