history

Balkany Palace

Balkány was first mentioned in 1214. The city name probably comes from Turkish and means swamp. The first rulers of the area were the members of the Gut-Keled family, who received the area from the king. Accordingly, the area was divided into the family, the western part went to Paul (Pál) and Thomas (Tamás), the eastern part to Paul's son, Lorenz (Lőrinc). During the attacks by the Turkic peoples and other nomadic tribes, the city lost large parts of its population. In the 18th century the population rose sharply again, in 1839 the city with 3006 inhabitants was the largest in the area.

today

In 2005 Balkány had 6,852 inhabitants. The most important problem is unemployment in an agrarian society.
