Friedrich Freiherr von Korányi-Tolcsvai

Frigyes Korányi , also German Friedrich Koranyi von Tolcsva (born December 20, 1828 in Nagykálló , † May 13, 1913 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian doctor ( internist ).

Life

Korányi studied medicine at the University of Pest and received his doctorate in 1851 for Dr. med. In 1848 he was one of the leaders of the revolutionary youth in Pest and took part in the freedom struggle of 1848/49 as a military doctor . In order to further his technical training, Korányi first went to Vienna , where he became an operation child at Schuh. However, Korányi soon had to leave Vienna again because the Austrian police, like so many other Hungarians, suspected him of participating in conspiracies. In the following years he made numerous study trips through Western Europe. In 1861 he settled in Nagykálló and in 1863 became senior physician at the local city hospital. From 1864 he was a private lecturer in neuropathology at the University of Pest and became head of the neuropathological department of the metropolitan hospital. From 1866 to 1908 he was Full Professor of Internal Diseases at the University of Budapest and Director of the Clinic for Internal Diseases. In 1868 he was rector of the University of Budapest.

In 1884 Korányi was appointed a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences , and in 1908 he was promoted to the baron class

Korányi created the modern clinical education for internists in Hungary. He dealt mainly with lung diseases and wrote classic monographs, among other things, on snot , anthrax , actinomycosis . He also wrote volumes in German for the Pitha-Billroth, Nothnagel- and Eulenburg collections.

He further developed numerous diagnostic methods (e.g. a new method of percussion of the spine, 1908). Koranyi is considered to be one of the first fighters against tuberculosis in Hungary.

His son, Baron Sándor Korányi von Tolcsva, later became a doctor and professor at the University of Budapest.
