Tõnis Kaumann

Tõnis Kaumann (born April 5, 1971 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is a postmodern Estonian composer.

life and work

Tõnis Kaumann studied at the Tallinn Music High School ( Estonian Tallinna Muusikakeskkool ) with René Eespere . He then studied with Raimo Kangro until 1994 and with Jaan Rääts until 2000 at the Estonian Music Academy .

In 1994, Kaumann won the Young European Composer composer's competition with his piano concerto. Since then he has composed numerous pieces of music. Kaumann works closely with the Estonian "NYYD Ensemble" for contemporary music.

His children's operas Ooperimarakratid (2001), Pomm (2002) and Mina, Napoleon (2004) also became famous . In 2005 he won the prestigious Estonian Heino Eller Prize . In 2008 Kaumann wrote the chamber opera Kaubamaja based on a libretto by Maarja Kangro .
