The Töpferberg is now a largely forested mountain and belongs for the most part to the urban area of Treffurt in the northwestern part of the Wartburg district . A short section of the Hessian-Thuringian state border runs over the Töpferberg near Wanfried near the field mill. Until the 1950s, the Kleintöpfer settlement with a brickworks belonging to Treffurt was located below the Töpferberg.

A medieval Landwehr runs over the mountain; it was part of the outer fortifications of Normannstein Castle and the town of Treffurt and blocked access to the Werra Valley on the Heldrabach .

Because of its border location, the Töpferberg was an ideal hiding place for smugglers and was also used by refugees from the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ) to cross the border during the “Green Border” years . The western section of the Mühlhausen – Treffurt railway with the Kleintöpfer stop led around the mountain .
