Tōki Susumu ( Japanese 闘 牙 進 ), actually Tamaki Jun ( 玉 城 順 ), (born July 4, 1974 in Ichikawa , Chiba Prefecture ) is a former Japanese sumo wrestler .

His trademark were the long sideburns - Sekiwake Takamiyama , who competed for the Takasago-beya in the 1970s and early 1980s, had become known for this only beard dress allowed for wrestlers. Despite his technically inexperienced fighting style, Toki has long been a permanent fixture in the top division and continues to enjoy high popularity among fans.

Career history

Tōki began his wrestling career in January 1991 as a wrestler for the wrestling team Takasago-beya under Fujinishiki, who died in 2003 . In 1998 Toki rose to the makuuchi division for the first time and was soon able to gain a foothold there. However, its performance is not enough to get into the sanyaku to advance -Ränge. Only once, in the September 2003 basho , led the banzuke (ranking) Tōki as komusubi . However, he lost this status immediately again, and in early 2004 he suffered a shoulder injury, as a result of which he was relegated in the league and finally downgraded to the second division ( Jūryō ). After that, ascents into makuuchi remained episodes. In November 2005, Toki celebrated another success by winning the tournament in the second division. After only two-thirds of the tournament in January 2006 and a high make-koshi in March, he was relegated to the Makushita division. Before the 2006 summer tournament in Tokyo, Toki finally announced his resignation due to persistent back problems.

Combative characteristics

Tōki's technique hardly varied. Mostly he tried to keep his opponents at a distance with his long arms and to defeat them by means of pushing and punching techniques and punches in the face ( Harite ). However, if his opponent managed to attach a grip to Tōki's Mawashi , he could hardly assert himself. Nor was he able to perform such fingering techniques on the same level as most wrestlers in the upper makuuchi. Against the top fighters of the league, he could rarely win a fight in his 38 tournaments in the top division. An example is Chiyotaikai , against whom he was not able to prevail once in 14 encounters.
