Tōru Arakawa

Tōru Arakawa ( Japanese 荒 川 通 , Arakawa Tōru ; * November 1932 in Gifu Prefecture , Japan ; † June 20, 2015 in Tokyo , Japan) was a karate grandmaster of the Wadō-Ryū style . He was one of the few karateka graduates in Japan with a 9th dan.

Tōru Arakawa began karate training at Nihon University at the age of 18 . In the early 1960s he toured Europe and America with Tatsuo Suzuki and Hajime Takashima to make karate public in Western countries.

Arakawa held the office of managing director of JKF Wadōkai from 1962 to 1979 . In 1982 he played a key role in the creation of the first Shitei Kata book, which standardized katas for JKF competitions across all styles. In addition, he trained numerous successful athletes in the 1980s, including Nishimura Seiji and Maeda Toshiaki .

Until his death in June 2015, Arakawa taught in his dōjō in Shibuya and at international seminars in Japan and overseas.
