The T-40 ( Russian Т-40 ) is a Soviet tractor that was manufactured in the Lipetski Traktorny Sawod (LTZ for short) from 1961 . In just under 35 years of construction, around 1.2 million copies of the vehicle, which is located below the MTZ-50 , were produced.
Vehicle history
The Lipetski Traktorny Sawod began building wheel tractors in 1958. The first model, the T-30 , was only built for a short time and was replaced by the T-40 in 1961. This was equipped with a more powerful four-cylinder diesel engine, which, depending on the version, is started electrically or by means of a gasoline-powered starter motor. In addition, a cabin for the tractor driver was installed as standard. The roof is not made of sheet metal, but rather as a tarpaulin. The tractor is similar to the 10 hp more powerful MTZ-50 , but is about a ton lighter.
Two years after the start of series production, production of the all-wheel drive version T-40A began. Both models were built unchanged until 1977. From 1972, the T-40M and T-40AM (with all-wheel drive) were manufactured in parallel. These tractors have a revised smooth radiator grille and a D-144 diesel engine that develops 50 hp (37 kW).
The models around the T-40M were manufactured until 1995, so the tractor was in series production for 34 years without interruption. A total of 1,196,200 T-40s of all modifications were made, the successor being the revised LTS-55 and the LTS-60, which is still in production .
Unlike other Soviet-made tractors, there is no evidence that T-40 machines also came to the German Democratic Republic . At least occasionally, however, it made it to countries in the west, for example France .
Model versions
Different versions of the tractor were built over the long production period. The following list does not claim to be complete.
- T-40 - basic version, built from 1961 to 1977. The tractor had a round shaped radiator plate and rear-wheel drive.
- T-40A - model with all-wheel drive based on the T-40, built from 1963.
- T-40AN - version for working on slopes. The ground clearance has been reduced to achieve a low center of gravity.
- T-50A - Equipped with a lift truck for use in industrial plants.
- T-40M - In 1972 a modernized version of the basic model appeared, equipped with a more powerful engine and built until 1995.
- T-40AM - Equivalent to the T-40M, equipped with all-wheel drive.
- T-40AMN - variant for slopes with new engine.
- T-40AP - version with all-wheel drive that was used as a municipal vehicle . Sliding signs and spreading devices were added, especially for winter service.
