T. Harry Williams

Thomas Harry Williams , mostly cited as T. Harry Williams, (born May 19, 1909 in Vinegar Hill , Illinois , † July 6, 1979 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ) was an American historian . He was a professor at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge.

Williams studied at the University of Wisconsin in Platteville with a bachelor's degree in 1931 and at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a master's degree in 1932 and his doctorate in 1937 with William B. Hesseltine . He taught there and was from 1938 professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and from 1941 professor at the University of Louisiana (from 1953 Boyd Professor ). In 1960 he gave the Harmon Memorial Lecture in Military History at the United States Air Force Academy .

1966/67 he was visiting professor at the University of Oxford ( Harmsworth Professor ). In 1957 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . He has received several honorary doctorates (including Tulane University , Loyola University).

He is best known for his book Lincoln and his Generals on Abraham Lincoln's relationship with his generals in the American Civil War (as well as other books on generals of the Northern and Southern states) and the biography of Louisiana Governor Huey Long . For the latter, he received the Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the National Book Award. He also wrote a school book on American history widely used in the United States.

In 1979 a chair at LSU was named after him and the oral history program there is also named after him. Extensive oral history records on tape served as the basis of his Huey Long biography.
