The Cramer-Klett settlement in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg was built as a workers' settlement between 1896 and 1906 by the mechanical engineering company MAN (then still " Klett & Co. "), whose name pays tribute to the MAN founder Theodor von Cramer-Klett (1817–1884) . The expansion of MAN's production and the resulting influx of new workers had made it necessary to build the settlement. The MAN plant in Gustavsburg is located about 500 meters south of the Cramer-Klett settlement. The settlement, popularly known as "Cramer", was the center of the community and social life in Gustavsburg. Today the houses are rented out by the non-profit building cooperative Mainspitze eG. The settlement and the steel houses are part of the route of industrial culture Rhein-Main Mainspitze .

description

Around the central Cramer-Klett-Platz, 36 houses with 148 apartments were built, which were designed by Karl Hofmann from Darmstadt. The differently designed buildings are based on the style of English country and Hessian farmhouses . The “Kastanienburg” daycare center is located at Cramer-Klett-Platz . Due to its social, architectural and urban development significance, the settlement was recognized as a monument in 1979.

Steel houses

After the Second World War , the MAN steel house was developed as a possible new, civilian product. Nine model houses of this building system were built between 1948 and 1953 in the north-west of the settlement on Robert-Koch-Strasse. They are still inhabited today. These are single-storey houses with three rooms and gently sloping roofs. The supporting structure and the outer wall cladding consist of painted steel sheets.

Street names

The street names in and around the settlement usually have names that have something to do with the MAN company in some way.

All roads within the settlement are designated as traffic-calmed areas.

The settlement is surrounded by Robert-Koch-Strasse in the north, Nürnberger Strasse in the east, Dr.-Kitz-Strasse to Friedrich Kasimir Kitz and Darmstädter Landstrasse, which is part of Bundesstrasse 43 , in the south. In addition to Nürnberger Strasse, the nearby Augsburger Strasse also commemorates the two places where MAN was founded.

Support association

The Förderverein-Cramer-Klett-Siedlung Gustavsburg was founded on September 13, 2017. The association is registered in the register of associations and recognized by the tax office as non-profit. The development association wants to work for the preservation of the cultural and historical workers' settlement.
