TAO is a Japanese drum and dance group in 1993 in Komaki in Aichi Prefecture was founded by Ikuo Fujitaka.

history

In 1994, the group moved to the Kujū highlands on the southernmost island of Kyūshū near Taketa in Ōita Prefecture . The members set up their headquarters and training center for their drum and dance work there. They named him Grandioso . In addition to musical performance, the type of their art performance requires very high physical performance, which they develop together in their training center with half marathons, strength training and martial arts training. On this they organized the international music festival Beat of the Globe in 2002 . In 2004 and 2005 they performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe . They have been touring internationally since 2003 and appearing regularly on all continents, including touring Germany several times, for the first time in 2006.

style

The music is based on Japanese traditions, including the centuries-old Wadaiko art, the rhythmic beating of giant drums, but also takes inspiration from Korean , Maori and Indonesian musical styles. Borrowings are also made in pop music. Besides traditional pieces, they compose most of the pieces themselves. The instruments used are taiko drums, shinobue flutes, marimbas and koto zithers.
