Ten Sing ( original spelling TEN SING, for Norwegian tenåringe and synge , translated " teenage singing") is a form of musical-cultural-creative Christian youth work within the YMCA , which originally comes from Norway and is now with groups in Europe , the USA , South America , the Philippines and China is represented.

history

The Norwegian pastor Kjell Grønner traveled to Hamburg in 1966 and attended a youth show by Sing-Out 66 there . He wanted to establish this project in Norway and invited Sing Out Germany to Norway.

In 1968, Grønner founded the first Ten Sing group in Bergen, inspired by the German Sing-Out movement at the time. This was originally a youth choir that interpreted contemporary music. The Christian preaching was also part of the meeting.

In 1985 the Norwegian Tom Olav Guren founded the first Swiss ten-sing group in St. Gallen . In 1996 there were 35 groups in Switzerland; today there are around 20 groups.

Ten Sing has also been represented in Germany since 1986. In charge of the Ten Sing work in Germany is the YMCA , who also owns the rights to the name and the concepts of the Ten Sing work.

In 1994, with the support of the Federal Youth Ministry, the Ten Sing Germany project began, in the course of which 34 Ten Sing groups had been founded by 1997. In 2007 there were already around 120 to 150 groups with around 5000 active young people, around 110 groups are registered for 2018, around 500 across Europe.

In April 2016 the "Friends of TEN SING in Germany e. V. “based at the location of the German YMCA Association in Kassel to support the Ten Sing work throughout Germany.

concept

Ten Sing was initially intended as a new missionary-oriented youth work. However, a corresponding target no longer exists in every group; A commitment to the evangelical faith is not a prerequisite for participating and working with Ten Sing. The main characteristic of Ten Sing is that it is youth work by young people for young people. The Ten Sing work wants to give the participants the opportunity to try out many areas, to get involved and to take on tasks. The fact that new members are encouraged and so quickly grow into tasks, many of the employees are quite young, which means that the cooperation between the leading and participating Ten Singers is close. Differences between leading and participating members in the areas of lifestyle and musical taste, which could be caused by large age differences, are largely avoided.

Ten Sing's original concept was based on three pillars, the 3-K model : culture, creativity, Kristus (Norwegian for Christ). Since 2001, a concept that has been supplemented by two additional terms and translated into English has become increasingly popular. This concept, referred to as the 5-C model , is also the guideline for work in Germany today.

5-C model

Each Ten Sing group works together towards a concert, the group going through three work phases in order to have developed a stage program after about a year.

Great value is placed on it here that young people their own culture ( Culture ) bring with it are songs interpreted by the musical tastes of young people.

Creativity ( Creativity ) is needed in the various workshops - usually at least band drama / theater, dance, art - to lay the foundations for the concert.

The third C ( Christian ) plays a role especially in these rehearsals, as Christian faith is discussed in devotions . The concerts can also have an evocative character, so gospels and spirituals also take up space in the choir's repertoire .

To strengthen the competence ( Competence ) of employees and group members are offered specialized training, including the annual throughout Germany advertised Ten Sing seminar in Dassel , but also organized in individual regions smaller seminars.

The social fabric plays a fundamental role in Ten Sing groups. The term ( care ) encompasses community and mutual help, but also pastoral care and accompaniment of the group by older members or full-time employees.

Structures

Ten sing groups usually consist of at least the following four basic workshops or teams: choir, band, theater and dance. The choir rehearsal, in which all members usually take part, is the central meeting point for every Ten Sing group. In addition, depending on the interests and skills of the group members, there are other workshops or teams, e.g. B. the mini choir, workshops or teams for breakdance, clapping, design of T-shirts, posters and the website, for the design of devotions. The group's activities are usually brought together and coordinated in a management team in which each workshop / team is represented. Most of the decisions are made here or in the group plenary .

Ten singing groups are usually founded at the request of a YMCA or another local sponsoring group through starter concerts by other groups or starter projects put together for this purpose with subsequent workshop days. In its start-up phase, the group is initially headed by adults until this function can be partially or fully handed over to suitably qualified young people.

Former Ten Sing members who have outgrown group work often get involved even after leaving the group. B. in the further accompaniment of the group, in the organization and implementation of seminars, projects and festivals on regional, national and international level.

Since Ten Sing is a youth work of the YMCA , its organizational structures at supraregional, national and international level are based on the structures of the YMCA and YMCA.

Seminars

Part of the supraregional Ten Sing work are the seminars that contribute to further training and networking among young people. Here the young people learn skills that they can bring to the weekly work of the local group. The seminars are initiated by the YMCA regional associations or the YMCA general association.

Well-known former members

Some successful musicians have already emerged from this musical youth work, such as Philipp Rauenbusch , the bassist from Reamonn , the group Glory of Joann (winner of the SchoolJam 2007), the group Silbermond or Laura Lee from GURR .
